(8/5) The Department of Urban and Regional Planning (URP) Undip in collaboration with Universitas Gadjah Mada and Radboud University hosted a summer course titled “International Joint Course 2023”. The theme that was chosen in this summer course is “Learning Urban Transformation: Ensuring Sustainability in a Changing World”, where this theme was chosen to provide experiences for the participants in understanding urban transformation that currently occurred in two big cities in Indonesia, namely Semarang and Yogyakarta. This summer course was held in a hybrid form and was taken by students who are currently pursuing master’s degrees both at those three universities above and from other universities. The opening ceremony was held in the Theatre Room, the Department of URP Undip.
Prof. Dr-Ing. Wiwandari Handayani, S.T, M.T, MPS, the Head of the Department of URP Undip, had the opportunity to give opening remarks. In her remarks, she welcomed the participants who joined the event which has been held for five times. She also hoped that this collaboration will not only stop at this summer course but also on other matters. “Welcome to the City of Semarang and please enjoy this event. Thank you for the support from all the parties involved,” she said.
The same thing was also expressed by the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Ir. M. Agung Wibowo, M.M, M.Sc, PhD, where he gave full support to the Department of URP Undip in hosting this summer course. “I am supporting this program because it not only provides benefit for our students, colleges, and faculty, but also this program can strengthen international relations with the related parties,” he said.
Arwita Mawarti, S.T, M.T from the Regional Planning Agency (BAPPEDA) of Semarang City also welcomed the participants. As one of the partners in this summer course and also as a part of the Semarang City Government, she expressed how the Semarang City Government really welcomes the participants in learning everything related to the city planning that has been implemented in Semarang. “Semarang is an interesting city to be researched by the students. And we welcomed the arrival of these participants in the City of Semarang,” she said.
The summer course will last for 9 hari, in which the first 5 days will be held in Semarang and 4 days will be held in Yogyakarta. The participants were invited to visit several institutions in the City of Semarang such as BAPPEDA of Semarang City and Jatibarang Landfill, and several interesting destinations such as Mangunharjo Coastal Subdistrict and Kandri Tourism Village to learn directly about the strategies of the locals of Semarang in surviving the climate change and carrying out sustainable development in their city.
The participants gave positive feedback for this event. M. Deriel Ari Pranata, one of the participants from Undip, said that this event gave him an opportunity to meet various people from other sides of the globe and discuss existing urban issues. “For me, this event is really interesting because here I’m not only learning and exploring new things but also gaining new experiences related to urban area management,” said Deriel who currently taking a master’s degree in URP Master Program in Undip.
Muhammad Fahad Malik, one of the participants from Pakistan, was impressed with this event. For him, this summer course gave him a lot of experience regarding how different urban management in Indonesia is compared to that in his country. “I’m quite impressed by how the city governments in Indonesia manage its city. This summer course has given me an impressive experience for me.”
(5/5) The Department of Urban and Regional Planning (DURP) Undip collaborates with the Victoria University of Wellington to host a seminar entitled “International Lecture Series: Urban Transportation and Capacity for Climate Change Action”. This seminar is the second series of the Urban and Regional Scientific Forum (USRF) which started in 2021. This seminar was held in a hybrid format in the Theatre Room, DURP Undip.
In this seminar, Rukuh Setiadi, S.T, MEM, Ph.D from the Department of URP Universitas Diponegoro was appointed as the main speaker along with Dr. Alex Lo from the School of Geography, Environment, and Eart Science, Victoria University of Wellington. Meanwhile, Aniessa Delima Sari, M.Sc from the Urban Initiative for Climate Change (IKUPI) was chosen as the moderator in this seminar. The topic of urban transportation and its capacity to support climate change action was discussed as a form of manifestation that the Department of URP takes in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As one of the institutions which support the realization of SDGs, the Department of URP Undip strives to multiply the amount of discussion and knowledge transfers so that more intellectuals are interested in discussing climate change and SDGs.
Prof. Dr-Ing. Wiwandari Handayani, S.T, M.T, MPS, had the opportunity to deliver the opening remarks at this event. In her remarks, she expressed her joy in organizing this International Lecture Series. According to her, International Lecture Series will help the urban and regional planners to hold hands together in dealing with climate change. “I hope that all urban and regional planners now have to agree to face the challenges of climate change that are right in front of their eyes,” she said.
She also hoped that students and lecturers who participate in the seminar either online or offline were able to develop studies related to urban planning and climate change more broadly after attending this seminar. “We hoped that in the future we have more students that have Final Works (Tugas Akhir) taking climate change and its relationship with urban and regional planning as their subjects. Hopefully, it can generate more interesting and diverse topics,” she said at the end of her remarks.

(2/5) The Department of Regional and Urban Planning (DPWK) Undip collaborates with the Asia Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN-GCR) held a program titled “Developing the Capacity of Student Scientists for Supporting Disadvantaged Communities to Cope with Flooding” (DECAF). The symbolic opening ceremony as well as the first lecture phase was held in the Theatre Room, DPWK Undip.
DECAF is a collaborative project funded by APN-GCR and led by the Victoria University of Wellington (New Zealand) collaborates with several leading universities in the Asia Pacific, including Universitas Diponegoro (Indonesia), Spring University (Myanmar), Clemson University (USA), University of Nottingham Ningbo (UK/China), and the Education University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong). This program aims to provide preparation for student scientists to be able to deal with flooding problems that often occur in Indonesia. In this project, students from various departments and universities will receive a series of modules that are packed into several online classes and fieldwork activities to learn about flood risk management.
256 participants from various majors will receive two phases of activities. The first phase consists of a series of 6 hybrid and online classes taught by experts from Universitas Diponegoro, Victoria University of Wellington, and several partner universities. For the second phase, the class will be delivered in the form of fieldwork activities and using 4 training modules that will be applied in Pekalongan City, Central Java. In this program, several local parties were invited as partners, such as the Department of Public Works, Water Resources, and Spatial Planning (Dinas Pusdataru) Central Java, Regional Planning & Development Agency (BAPPEDA) Pekalongan City, Regional Agency for Disaster Management (BPBD) Pekalongan City, and NGOs MercyCorp Indonesia and Kemitraan.
Rukuh Setiadi, S.T, MEM, Ph.D, a lecturer at DPWK Undip and one of the program administrators said, the existence of the DECAF program was very beneficial for the students, especially students from Undip. According to him, this collaboration program with universities from abroad not only encourages scientific updates, but also provides an opportunity for the students who participate in this program to do multidisciplinary collaboration with other students from various majors. “This program is very beneficial for the students in Indonesia, especially in Undip. And more importantly, this program encourages multidisciplinary collaboration from students from various scientific fields,” he said.
The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Ir. M. Agung Wibowo, M.M, M.Sc, Ph.D, welcomed this program. He hoped that this program is not only benefit the students, but also the government and society, especially in Pekalongan City. “Hopefully this program can be beneficial not only for the students, but also for the government and its society in Pekalongan City,” he said.
(28/4) The Faculty of Engineering Undip received two electric motorcycles from Freeport Indonesia. This grant is part of Freeport Indonesia’s agenda to collaborate with educational institutions in introducing and developing environmentally friendly technologies. The symbolic awarding ceremony was held at the Dekanat Building 3rd floor.
Natalia Nauw, a representative from Freeport Indonesia, explained that this grant was a form of Freeport Indonesia’s commitment in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in which case the Faculty of Engineering Undip was chosen as their partner. “Previously, the Faculty of Engineering itself had often made contact with Freeport. Freeport itself supports the realization of SDGs by providing grants in the form of electric motorcycles to reduce emissions. And from there the Faculty of Engineering gave us the proposal so that we agreed to provide the grant,” she said.
She hoped that from this grant, other institutions can be inspired to take part in providing support for the development of environmentally friendly technologies to support the SDGs program. “This grant handover is an embryo that, in the future, can be reduplicated by other institutions to support the realization of SDGs.”
The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Ir. M. Agung Wibowo, M.M, M.Sc, Ph.D, welcomed the grant from Freeport Indonesia. For him, Freeport Indonesia’s mission in realizing the SDGs especially related to the development of sustainable technology is very much in line with the vision of the Faculty of Engineering and Universitas Diponegoro as one of the environmentally friendly green campuses. “As an institution that is ranked 2nd in UI GreenMetric, we hoped that in the future this cooperation can strengthen our vision in realizing the environmentally friendly technologies,” he said.
He hoped, with this grant, the Faculty of Engineering would be able to open up cooperation in other fields with Freeport Indonesia in the future. “We hope that with this cooperation, it can be an embryo for other cooperations with Freeport Indonesia related to the development of environmentally friendly technology that is currently being developed at the Faculty of Engineering,” Prof. Agung said.
(17/4) 13 students from the Faculty of Engineering were qualified as awardees in the 2023 Indonesian International Student Mobility Award (IISMA) program. This was announced through the site iisma.kemdikbud.go.id on Friday morning.
Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA) is a scholarship scheme for Indonesian students to do mobility program at top universities and industries overseas. This program was funded by the Government of the Republic of Indonesia.
Mada Sophianingrum, ST, MT, MSc, coordinator of the International Office, Faculty of Engineering, Undip explained, the number of students who passed the program this year had increased quite well compared to the previous year, whereas in 2022 there were 11 students who passed and this year there were 13 students who passed this program. According to her, the increase in the number of students who passed is inseparable from the preparations that the Faculty of Engineering had prepared to welcome IISMA 2023.
“For us, the most important key is the preparation. We have provided various preparations for our students so that they can pass IISMA this year. Starting from socialization, creating informative content about IISMA, to providing the online chat group for the applicants,” said Ms. Mada.
Vice Dean of Academic and Students Affairs, Prof. Dr. nat. tech. Siswo Sumardiono, S.T, M.T, appreciated the increase in the number of participants in this year. For him, this increase shows a good trend, where every year the number of students from the Faculty of Engineering who passed IISMA increases. “In my opinion, the increase in the number of students for this year is pretty good. From only 7 students in 2021, increase to 11 students in 2022, and now there are 13 students in 2023,” he said.
However, he highlighted the number of departments that send their students to this program. He hopes that in the next year, the number of participants can continue to increase and be more diverse. “Hopefully in 2024, the number of students participating in this IISMA program can increase and more students will participate from other departments,” said Prof. Siswo.
The students who passed the program also gave various responses regarding their acceptance as awardees. Stefanus Aditya Witjaksono, an awardee from the Department of Naval Architecture, said he was surprised when he was listed as one of the awardees. “Wow, to be honest, I was surprised because, in terms of achievements and organization, I was not as active as the others,” said Stefanus.
Nerissa Lenjau, one of the awardees from the Department of Environmental Engineering, showed a different response. She was grateful to have qualified as one of the awardees. She hopes that this opportunity can be useful not only for herself but also for others. “I am grateful to be given such an opportunity as one of the IISMA 2023 Awardees. Hopefully, I can use this new experience as best as possible and share it with the others.”

(18/4) The Faculty of Engineering Undip continues to show its quality as one of the leading educational institutions in the field of engineering in Indonesia. Lately, the Faculty of Engineering Undip was ranked 5th for the best Engineering College in Indonesia according to Edurank.org.
Edurank.org is an independent ranking institution that uses data from the index of scientific publications and citation index as the basis for determining its ranking. This year, the Faculty of Engineering Undip managed to stay in the top five in Indonesia and was ranked 628th in Asia for universities in the Engineering category.
Not only that, several departments in the Faculty of Engineering also obtain quite encouraging achievements. The Faculty of Engineering Undip becomes the faculty with the best Environmental Engineering program in Indonesia, where the Environmental Engineering department in the Faculty of Engineering is ranked first. Then, for Transportation Engineering, the Faculty of Engineering is ranked the second best in Indonesia. And for Structure Engineering and Mechanical Engineering are ranked the third best in Indonesia.
These impressive achievements were welcomed by the Dean, Prof. Ir. M. Agung Wibowo, M.M, M.Sc, Ph.D. According to him, the achievement as the fifth-best engineering college in Indonesia is magnificent. For him, FT Undip’s rank is related to Undip’s rank as the no. 1 university in the category of Graduate Employability in Indonesia. As the faculty in the no. 1 university, it is something appropriate that the Faculty of Engineering is able to show its quality in competing with other engineering colleges that are older and have been active in the world of engineering education for a longer time.
Prof. Agung advised that the Faculty of Engineering must keep moving forward in order to maintain its reputation. For him, the Faculty of Engineering is now able to reach this position because of good governance and strong and reliable human resources. “Let us keep moving forward, keep maintaining the reputation of this Faculty of Engineering,” Prof. Agung said.
It is hoped that with these achievements, the Faculty of Engineering could improve its education and research quality so that it can be the best engineering college in Indonesia.
