The Department of Urban and Regional Planning (DPWK) Undip in collaboration with the University of Hawai’i at Manoa held a Summer Course with the theme “Sustainability and Resilience in the Spatial Development”. The course, held from 16 to 25 July 2024, was attended by students from various countries, offline or online. The opening ceremony took place at Theater Room, DPWK Undip.
The Head of DPWK Undip, Prof. Dr-Ing Wiwandari Handayani, S.T, M.T, MPS, explains that this Summer Course has been held together for the third time with the Urban and Regional Planning, University of Hawai’i at Manoa. As Prof. Wiwandari said, there is a slight difference between this year’s course and the previous years. This year, apart from being held in hybrid using MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) platform, the participants also received a two-day symposium on Pedagogy and Urban Planning in collaboration with LuceSea Foundation, University of Hawai’i at Manoa.
“This year is a little bit different, because we combine the course with our research with LuceSea Foundation on Pedagogy and Urban Planning, so we have a two-day symposium, combined with a site visit later,” Prof. Wiwandari said.

Representative from the University of Hawai’i and Manoa, Assoc. Prof. Ashok Das, M.Arch, M.A, Ph.D, warmly appreciated this Summer Course. Ashok said that Semarang is an interesting place because there are tons of issues that can be learn. He hopes that students can learn many things from Semarang.
“There are not many very interesting places like Semarang. You have all kinds of issues. You have economic development issues, climate change, sea level rise, tradition, culture, in tassel in sort of conflict with modernization, urbanization, and the erasure of culture and heritage,” states Ashok.

Besides visiting the residents affected by climate change in Demak dan Semarang, the participants also had the opportunity to learn how to do batik in Laksmi Art Batik
In this Summer Course, the participants did not only receive materials and studio classes. The participants also had the opportunity to visit several places affected by climate change to learn directly with local communities, such as in Sayung Village and Tambakrejo. Other than that, the participants had the opportunity to learn how to do batik at Laksmi Art Batik
Jacob Wruck, one of the participants from the United States, was delighted with this Summer Course. He said that this program is a good opportunity to learn directly with affected residents. “The course was fantastic. We get to go to the communities, talk to the people, and see some of the factors (that causing) those situations…It’s been very good to get our hands on and get to ask people some questions that are supposed to be reaped not only from researching inside the class,” said Jacob.

We would like to express our deepest condolences to those who have been affected by the 7.5 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Taiwan on April 3rd, 2024. Our thoughts and prayers to those who have lost their loved ones and to those who are currently under alert because of this devastating tragedy.
We would also like to deliver our most sincere respect for the individuals and institutions who are providing emergency support, rescue efforts, and warnings to make sure that the people affected on the ground can stay safe and sound.
The Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Diponegoro, actively engages in student, academic, and research exchanges with our educational partners in Taiwan. Currently, we have sent several students to continue their studies at the National United University in Miaoli and the National Cheng Kung University in Tainan. We are confident that the strength and the experiences that the Taiwanese government had in taking care of the disaster could save them from serious damages caused by this unfortunate event.
We sincerely hope for quick recovery and restoration into normalcy for those affected by this disaster.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for information and communication technologies matters, currently opens the opportunity for youth from ITU Member States to be a part of the ITU Generation Connect Youth Envoys.
Generation Connect is a flagship initiative of the ITU Youth Strategy which aims at supporting youth involvement in amplifying their voices and views in ICT-related matters discussed on various activities and programs of ITU. The Youth Envoys is an opportunity for the youth generation to exchange and share their experiences and ideas on how they contribute to implementing meaningful connectivity and sustainable digital transformation and discussing how youth participation in countries can help shape the future information and communication landscape through strategies and initiatives supported by governments.
Youth Envoys from each country involved in Generation Connect could be eligible to join skill-building and internship opportunities and training and access the youth global network through participation in various selected regional and global ITU events and initiatives.
This program is voluntary and specified for youth eligible with these criteria:
- Aged between 18 and 24 years old on the date of the application deadline at 10 February 2024.
- Candidates from diverse educational backgrounds are welcome, including those from informal education backgrounds (without recognized academic degrees), if they can prove their knowledge or specific interest in ICTs, reflected in the implementation of the projects/activities they have led and/or played a significant role in. Education background in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), Social and Human Sciences, and Law Studies would be an asset.
- Committed and dedicated to implementing the use of ICTs for educational purposes, socio-economic advancement, or youth empowerment, showcased in numerous ways of impactful activities/projects at a community, national, regional, or global level
- Have an interest in the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and/or related UN programs regarding digital inclusion and empowerment of youth through ICTs.
