Profile
History & Development
As if it had become an inevitable course of history, the establishment of a university always goes through dynamics and great struggles—no different from the Faculty of Engineering at Diponegoro University. It began with the crystallization of ideas that turned into a grand vision initiated by several engineers such as Ir. Jacob Rais (Head of the Land Registration Office in Semarang), Ir. Gunawan, Prof. Ir. Soemarman (late), Ir. Subarkah, Ir. R. Oei Djwee Hwie, Ir. R. Soenardi (late), Ir. Lie Kok Gwan, Ir. Moeljadi, and Ir. Tjoa Tjeng Kie, to establish a higher education institution for engineering in the city of Semarang.
On October 20, 1958, with full support from the local government and various elements of society, this plan was realized through the opening of the Academy of Engineering under Semarang University, which had been established on January 9, 1957. During the third Dies Natalis celebration on January 9, 1960, the first President of the Republic of Indonesia, Ir. Soekarno, changed the name of Semarang University to Diponegoro University. Subsequently, on October 15, 1960, the Academy of Engineering was transformed into the Faculty of Engineering with Prof. Ir. Soemarman as its first Dean. The Department of Civil Engineering was the first department established in the Faculty of Engineering before the others were opened.
Lectures were initially held in the evenings by borrowing a building near Tugu Muda (which now stands as Wisma Perdamaian), before moving to Jalan MT. Haryono No. 427, a property of Pepekuper Teritorium IV, which became the campus. In a more stable period, the Faculty of Engineering relocated to the “White Building” at the Pleburan Campus on Jalan Hayam Wuruk. Later, in 1996, the Faculty of Engineering moved to its current location in Tembalang, developed through the Six Universities Development and Rehabilitation Sub-Sector Project (SUDR).
Since Diponegoro University was inaugurated as a state university on October 15, 1960, the Faculty of Engineering has continuously developed itself as a producer of high-quality human resources by establishing new Departments/Study Programs in line with the needs of society.
